Raising Day - Tongue and Groove

The frame is done!

The 'Bents' and 'Bays' are raised. The joists, stairs, and purlins are all installed and the porch is set. Typically, the roof is covered in a tongue and groove (T&G) prior to the installation of the Structural Insulated Panels (SIP's). This is not mandatory, but is typical. Some choose to use sheetrock, but most opt for T&G. The T&G can be applied in one of two ways. Either it is applied to the top of the timberframe, or it is applied to the bottom of the SIP. Which way determines what happens first...T&G or SIP. If the T&G is applied to the top of the timberframe that means the direction of the T&G will be perpendicular to the purlins, or top to bottom. In a rafter style roof, the T&G would run left to right. If the T&G is applied to the underside of the SIP, then it can run either direction. In most cases, the T&G is applied to the top of the timberframe. We typically do not install T&G (which meant many hours trying to find a picture) because it is installed by a local builder.
