The final connections in the 'Bay' spaces are in the roof. We either employ 'purlins' or 'rafters' to create the framework of the surface of the roof. Purlins run horizontally from 'Bent' to 'Bent' while rafters run along the slope of the roof from a ridge line to a wall line. A 'purlin' style roof still involves 'rafters' because they are contained within the 'Bent'. A 'rafter' style roof typically doesn't employ 'purlins'. A 'purlin' style roof is much faster to build and install. Depending on the size and design of the frame, the roof can be a wonderful collection of complex angles as roof lines collide. When people walk into timberframe homes, they look up. The roof is probably the first thing that attracts and holds their eye.
